Hilton Head Island Spotlight: Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra

When you think of Hilton Head Island, beautiful beaches along with fabulous golf and tennis probably come to mind. While there is little doubt that Hilton Head has a host of spectacular outdoor activities, what may not come to mind as quickly is Hilton Head’s vibrant cultural arts community. Offering many music, art, and theatrical venues, Hilton Head Island ranked number 22 in John Villani’s book “The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America.”

One of our great music venues, Hilton Head Island is home to the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.  The orchestra is comprised of 65 musicians who deliver concerts of exceptional quality in a variety of Classical music as well as Pops and Jazz.  This year, the orchestra celebrates its 30th year with Be Our Guest featuring principal guest conductor John Morris Russell conducting four concerts, the March 2012 International Piano Competition, and April 2012 “Symphony Under the Stars”, with additional performances led by Sean Newhouse, Teddy Abrams, Bohuslav Tarray, Daniel Meyer, and Arthur Post, including a Light Classic series of shorter, familiar works.  Upcoming concerts this month include:

The Clarinet Revolution
Jan.16 at 8pm
John Morris Russell conducting and featuring clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester performing Bach’s “Sinfonia”, Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto”, and Haydn’s “Symphony No 104″.

Additionally, tickets for the March 5-12 Hilton Head International Piano Competition will  be available beginning Jan.17.  This event began back in 1996 and has grown from a one-day event into a not to be missed eight-day, four-round, world class competition showcasing 20 talented young pianist from around the world. Tickets for the April 3 and 4, popular Symphony Under the Stars “Music of the Night” taking place under the tent at Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn featuring a variety of Opera, Classical and popular Broadway music, will be available beginning Jan. 10.  Visit the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra website for tickets or more information.

“Bringing world-class music to the Lowcountry”, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra  is just one of the many things that add to the island lifestyle that makes Hilton Head such a great place to call home.
